It depends on the needs and budget of the individual
organization.
The core of any VoIP system is the Call Controller,
which is a server that provides Private Branch Exchange
(PBX) features and functions. Voicemail and Auto-
Attendant capabilities are included in some Call
Controllers, or they can be a separate server. Basic
Automatic Call Distribution (ACD) software is usually
included in the Call Controller, but the reporting and
management software is usually a separate server.
Integrated Voice Response (IVR) is a separate server.
Unified Communications software usually resides on a
separate server. These are the pieces most commonly
discussed.
Some organizations will need additional peripheral
systems, some will need fewer.
