Q. Will VoIP save money?

Probably. But, how much savings are realized depends on
the costs of the environment it is replacing. In the past,
organizations with multiple locations, that maintained both a data
network and a telephone network, were benefited most.
Organizations with overseas operation that had data circuits to
transmit financial data at night, found VoIP allowed these circuit
to be used in the daytime to avoid the cost of international long
distance. But, today’s marketplace is much more competitive, and
these historical uses have become less relevant.
Today, cost justification is less focused on reducing current
expenses, and more focused on quantifying the value of
improved productivity. Productivity will increase as various
systems and services are deployed which actually improve work
flows. The great shortfall in this area is that few organizations do
a sufficient job of establishing a base line for the current
environment. As improvements are systematically deployed, day
to day operation dilutes the perceptions of these improvements,
and over time people forget about where they started. Very
successful projects can receive lackluster reviews because
improvements were spread out over time and their value was not
sufficiently quantified.
